Hi everyone,

I’m fascinated by blue gemstones and would love to learn more from the community. I know sapphire is one of the most popular, but there seem to be many others like topaz, aquamarine, tanzanite, and lapis lazuli.

How do these gemstones differ in terms of color intensity, hardness, and durability for jewelry use? Are there specific care tips for each type to prevent fading or damage? Also, which blue gemstones are considered rare or highly valuable?

I’d really appreciate any insights, personal experiences, or recommendations for collecting or wearing them.

Blue gemstones vary widely in color, hardness, and durability. Sapphire is very hard (9/10 Mohs) and durable, ideal for everyday jewelry. Aquamarine (7.5–8) has a lighter blue and is slightly softer, so it needs gentle care. Blue gemstones like topaz, tanzanite, and lapis lazuli each have unique qualities—topaz (8) is bright and durable but can be sensitive to heat, tanzanite (6–7) is softer and more delicate, best for occasional wear, and lapis lazuli (5–6) is soft and opaque, sensitive to water and chemicals. Rare and highly valuable stones include Kashmir sapphires, high-quality tanzanite, and untreated aquamarine. For all, avoid harsh chemicals and extreme heat to preserve their color and integrity.
