Black wigs, similar to other wigs, are made from a range of materials that provide varying aesthetic appearances, longevity, and comfort. Some of the most common materials used are as follows:
  • Human Hair Wigs: Human hair wigs are in high demand due to their natural appearance and versatility. They can be heat-styled, colored, and treated like natural hair. Black human hair wigs are in vogue because they resemble natural hair texture and movement, giving a realistic appearance and feel
  • Synthetic Wigs: Artificial fibres are used to create synthetic wigs such as Kanekalon or Toyokalon. Black synthetic wigs are cheap and easy to maintain, though they are not as durable as human hair wigs and may look less natural at times.
  • Heat-Resistant Synthetic Fibers: These are a grade of synthetic fibers that can endure low to moderate heat styling. Although providing more styling versatility compared to regular synthetic wigs, they still do not offer the full versatility of human hair, as seen with black wigs.
  • Animal Hair: Animal hair is used in some wigs, e.g., yak or horsehair. They are not widely used but may be applied for particular styling requirements or period costumes.
  • Blends: A few wigs combine human hair and synthetic fibers, aiming for a balance of price, appearance, and styling flexibility. The blends might have a more realistic appearance than 100% synthetic wigs, yet are less expensive than 100% human hair wigs.
Each of these materials has its strengths and weaknesses, allowing for individual preferences and requirements to be met in terms of resilience, styling, and price.
