Big box braids are a classic, bold look, but their size can mean a lot of weight is concentrated on small sections of your natural hair. To wear this style safely, the "knotless" technique is highly recommended. Unlike traditional box braids that start with a heavy knot at the scalp, knotless braids start with your natural hair and gradually feed in the extension hair. This will greatly alleviate the stress and make the braids lie flat. The other piece of advice would be to not use very thick sections since the natural hair needs to be able to carry the extension. Maintaining these braids requires focusing on your scalp more than the braids themselves. This can be done by using a bottle with a pointed nozzle to spray witch hazel or a scalp cleanser to ensure that your pores are not clogged up due to the heavy braids. Since they become quite heavy when wet, avoid hanging the braids while they dry out.
