I use my GL.iNet mainly for travel, and loading it with a VPN profile I found through VPNReviewCompass made airport Wi-Fi feel a lot safer. Haven’t tried custom firmware yet, but it’s on my list.
A minor setting that is often overlooked is the cause of the Linksys port forwarding not working problems that I have observed in a few users. Since dynamic IPs can violate the rule, make sure the device you're forwarding to has a static IP address. Additionally, check that your manual port forwarding and UPnP are not in conflict.
